Harlem has been the center of Black Culture since 1904 when southern Blacks began to Migrate from the oppressive south. According to the Census Blacks made up of only 10% of the Harlem populace. During the 1920's Blacks made up 70% of the Harlem populace. It is during this time the world experienced The Black Renaissance, where Art,Music and Writing highlighted the celebration of the Black Republic called Harlem. Harlem was the center of the Black Universe. During the 1950's Harlem was ground zero for Black progressive thought. The Nation of Islam and its Inspiring Discipline, With a Great speaker in Malcolm X speaking about the teaching of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Mr. James Baldwin with His Writings on the Black experience and hundreds of other socially conscience brothers and sisters too many to name. Harlem was Black Mecca.
The seventies, eighties, Was a time of deterioration. it was not uncommon to see abandoned building on Blocks where popular Speakeasies once stood, Blocks where Count Basie lived are now Drug zones. In the Late eighties Crack was introduced to Harlem and a new identity A new identity was Born. Young Flashy and Fast money. It was not uncommon to see a teenager pushing the latest Whip, or wearing Junk jewelry, Looking and Living the so called Hood dream. But the reality is The drug trade brought Violence and Destroyed families. That time has passed. But the legacy that was left behind Has destroyed our village and left it Open for Plunder.
Today Harlem is no longer the center of Black conscientiousness. In Harlem like parts of Brooklyn,, Washington Dc, Baltimore, Chicago has been Gentrified. There is barely anything that resembles the Harlem That was the center of Blackness. Harlem-mites are being forced out because of un-affordable rent. Charter schools have spread through out Harlem. Neighborhoods Are policed aggressively. so the annual block parties which nurtured community no longer takes place. Harlem is the Black Republic we all say we need. We must not be afraid to compete. Black Business has always been Our way to create our own lane in America. We must Think bigger than we do now. We need to support Black businesses and in return Black businesses Must take The responsibility to create Lanes and Safe zones for our people. Republic Black is a safe zone for Black thought. We will support/promote Black businesses, we will Support/promote Black Art, We will Support/promote BLACKNESS.

We need a Maynard Jackson. We need to make sure there will never be another Charles Rangel auctioning off Harlem bit by bit. We need to make sure a high percentage of contracts to build in our community are granted to black contractors, Black architects, Black masons , etc should have first dibs not at rebuilding Harlem. We need to stand up to Columbia and say “ you won’t use me as a space saver ”. Tell the churches to stop being so accommodating, we are not for sale or on display. Not really an elevator conversation but I totally agree
Brothers and Sisters dont have to accept blatant gentrification. It's ok to email them and let them know some things are not acceptable.
